Group gets help ft By Ann Farmer Operation Serve is growing but still needs more volunteers, especially in the Columbia area, officials say. The program, instituted at USC this past uctoDer ana tne only one 01 us Kina in tne nation, attempts to meet the needs of all kinds of handicapped school children through volunteer work from college students, faculty and community groups. The first stage of the program was its institution at all USC campuses. Each campus addresses the needs of the local school districts, coordinator Richard Ferrante said. THE COLUMBIA campus provided tutors this past year, while Union had restaurant menus printed in braille. Other ways the program works include building special equipment in classrooms for handicapped students and "adopting a class" because handicapped students often need extra help on class field trips, Ferrante said. The second stage of the program is progressing well, according to Ferrante. This year the program has been announced to civic groups as well as through the media, Ferrante said. "WE FIND tutors for ail types of (handicapped) students," he said. "(USC) students can really be of help. We can train i tutors in any major." The program benefits tutors, too, Ferrante said. Students can be aware of handicapped people and not stereotype such students. One participant, he said, was very encouraged to find how the approaches she learned in the college classroom worked in a real situation. Helping people also gives a personal satisfaction, he said. "We channel volunteer resources from the university to the local school districts. We take the basic concept of helping kids with difficulties and adapting to their needs," he said. BY VOLUNTEERING, (students) are not committing themselves for life. Most school districts request at least two hours a week. Having that special friend means as much as the tutoring itself," Ferrante said. A failure in Jamaica would greatly damage those who believe a conservative, capitalistic approach is the answer to the ills of the Third World. 90.5 0 The GAMKCOCK Is the student newsam ?M| ? paper of the University of South Carolina I and is published three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays dur_ j inn (he fall and spring semesters and | ffV V* | weekly on Wednesdays during both summer sessions, with the exception of uni versify holidays and examination periods. ^V I Opinions expressed in the GAMEMM m COCK are those of the editors and not those of the University of South Carol'na.
