Cross-country ti in first road rac From Staff Reports USC's cross-country team competed in their first race of the year last Saturday, a 10-kilometer run at McEntyre Air Force Base. Alan Drosky was the strong finisher for the Gamecocks, finishing fifth overall with a time of 31:51. Greg Wimer and Alan Moore nnisnea jusi oemna urosicy, coming in sixth and seventh place, respectively. Other strong finishers for USC were Terry O'Toole (33:42), Craig Seto (33:53), Paul Gallito (35:11), Mike Costello (35:31) and Paul Looney (37:08). The cross-country team will participate in the Georgia State Invitational next Saturday. THREE USC basketball players will start preseason conditioning after undergoing surgery over the summer. Senior center Jimmy Foster twisted his right knee in one of the National Invitational Tournament All-Star games in Australia. Foster developed problems with the cartilage in the knee and underwent arthroscopic surgery. According to head basketball trainer Jim Price, Foster should start conditioning this week. Duane Kendall, a junior from Las Vegas, underwent arthroscopic surgery in his home town over the summer. Matt Mayes, a 6-3 freshman guard from Woodberry, Va., Forest Prep School developed "jumper's knee," or a softening of the tendons. Mayes, who had been inactive since the injury, was given permission yesterday from a doctor to begin light running. THE USC sailing team placed third in the South Points Regatta, held on Sept. 16 in Charleston. Light winds postponed the races until noon, and that afternoon the teams finished six races with moderate winds from the north. The College of Charleston won the regatta, while the Citadel finished second. Clemson and Georgia Tech finished fourth and fifth, respectively, behind USC. Sailing for USC's A Division were Terri Appleby, Liz Canniff, Robert Faulkner, and Jessica Story. Sailing for the B Division sailors were Kistian Andreasen, Max Fulda, and Harry Weimon.
