Yearbooks, teleph arrive early for s By Amy Bedenbaugh USC students are receiving yearbooks and telephone directories earlier this year than in those past. "This year's "Garnet & Black" is impressive. The staff worked together closely and put in a lot of extra hours to ensure this being the best yearbook ever," said Ron pmUr ^irp/>tr\r f ' iv.1 , uuwivi uiuuvm ivitukl ctllU associate director of student activities. "They adhered to strict and early deadlines, and they had some excellent advisement from Julie Busch and editor Joe Hughes." The 1982-83 "Garnet & Black" will be available in the Russell House lobby today through Thursday. Students who have Philippines co,"i"'""' from pagi behind the killing, Kattenburg said. "They (the military) might have feared that if Aquino came back, Marcos might be overthrown and they'd lose their power. MARCOS HAS said it was an act by the communist party to discredit his government, but Kattenburg dismisses that by asking, "How could they have penetrated the 1 rif \t0 ' ' Regardless of who was behind the killing, one immediate effect it has had is to lift the constraints on political violence, Weatherbee said. "The risk of a Marcos assassination has considerably increased," Weatherbee said. "The Philippines have traditionally had Wild West politics, but they wouldn't knock each other's leaders off." The people to the left of center will be driven further left. The elimination of Aquino means the center is weaker. "THE FIRST thing the left tries to do is weaken the center to make it a left versus right battle," Weatherbee said. But Weatherbee could not say what the final impact of Aquino's death would be. "Aquino rightly or wrongly felt that he could rally the opposition around his cause." One possibility is that his martyrdom will be a cause for the people, but I doubt that. He was a symbol while in prison and exile. 1 - - i * i * i J ~ cion i ininK mc memory can uu wiiai inc jjcjson couldn't do. The Aquino killing and its aftermath af1 ' W'ISk * Mentmg. Orders for the 1983-84 "Garnet & Black" will also be taken. The university telephone directory was distributed Aug. 22. Emler said the directory is avanaoie early this year because of a change in printing companies. "THE BASES are central to the capaouiues 01 American armea torces to carry out missions in East Asia and the Pacific.. .Subic cannot be replaced," Weatherbee said. The result is that the American government is in the position of dealing with an unpopular regime that in some way may be connected with the killing. Weatherbee said: "They're the ones we have to negotiate with." But Kattenburg points out the dangers of Marcos' reputation rubbing off on the United States. "If the people of the Philippines loose respect for the administration of the United States," Kattenburg said, "then our bases won't be worth much." Although many people have called foi President Ronald Reagan to cancel his trip u the Philippines, neither USC professor said < decision should not be made yet. WEATHERBEE SAID to arbitrarily cancel the trip without further evidence or Aauino's killine would be an insult to th< government. However, if conditions in the Philippine; worsen or ihe Marcos regime was directly in volved in the killing, the president shouldn'i go, he said. "I'm certain when a decision tc go or no-go is made, it (the decision) will b< obvious to everyone," Weatherbee said.
