Carolina Cares From Staff and Wire Reports Carolina Day, an annual event organized by USC students to raise money and other items for local charities, will be held Saturday. About 100 USC student volunteers will go to area shopping centers and malls to accept donations of money, clothing, canned food and toys to be given to tne neeay in tne uoiumoia area. Carolina Cares volunteers begin their efforts at the beginning of the fall semester each year, according to Chairman Betsy Holderman. This year, various student organizations have been contacting the Carolina Cares office in Russell House to volunteer to help with the drive, Holderman said. She said it is one of the largest joint efforts she has seen since she became involved with the organization. This year is the 13th year of the project. Nixon will be the guest speaker at the 1982 Silver Elephant Dinner Jan. 13 at the Canty Building on the State Fairgrounds, said state GOP Chairman George Graham. The state Republican Party is handling ticket sales for the reception and dinner, an annual Republican Party event to honor contributors. Cost is $120 for individual tickets and $150 for couples. Tickets will cost $1,000 for a private reception to be held before the dinner reception. Those attending the private reception will include Sen. Strom Thurmond; Congressmen Floyd Spence, Carroll Campbell and Tommy Hartnett; and Lee Atwater, President Reagan's deputy assistant. THE CHAIRMAN of USC's Department of Physics and Astronomy has been selected to represent USC on the Oak Ridge Associated Universities council. Frank Avignone III replaces Oswald Schuette, who has been on the council since 1981.
