With each subsequent release, Wall of Voodoo has become less plodding, mechanical and boring. Still, the band's strange magic lacks potent spells ? "Call of the West" contains only a few good cuts. The tune has lyrics such as, "i wish i was in tiajuana/eating barbecued iguana," and many production effects on the vocals. /uso gooa is apy woria, ieaiunng a guiiar hck laKeon I on the "James Bond" theme and an introduction as wacky I as an outtake from the "Get Smart" TV series. "On Interstate 15," a loping instrumental that sounds like the theme from a Sergio Leone spaghetti western, is another. The title track is the most ambitious tune on the album; the song recounts one man's search for the wild, wild west. The tonge-in-cheek lyrics remind the listener of the Tubes' "What Do You Want From Life?" Six songs remain, and although thy -nay be better than Wall of Voodoo's earlier materia', tlA.y are not quality vcontents. Five of this half-dozen compose the first side of the album. Who releases an album with the best tracks on side two? Although the hype insists: "listen to the lyrics," the humor offered here doesn't stand out as material from pop songsters such as 10 c.c. Sparks, rockers such as City Boy and the Tubes, or the whole outrageous flock derived from Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart. On "Call of the West," Wall of Voodoo ? Stanard Ridgway, Chas T.
