Joe Nanini, Chas. T. Gray, Stanard Ridgway and
Marc Moreland are Wall of Voodoo.
"Call of the West" is the most accessible music the band
has released, following a self-titled debut that included a
mutated version of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire," and the
"Dark Continent" LP, which received some critical ac
claim.
With each subsequent release, Wall of Voodoo has
become less plodding, mechanical and boring. Still, the
band's strange magic lacks potent spells ? "Call of the
West" contains only a few good cuts.
"MEXICAN RADIO" is receiving national airplay and

is the most popular song on the album. The tune has lyrics
such as, "i wish i was in tiajuana/eating barbecued
iguana," and many production effects on the vocals.

I on the "James Bond" theme and an introduction as wacky
I as an outtake from the "Get Smart" TV series. "On Interstate
15," a loping instrumental that sounds like the
theme from a Sergio Leone spaghetti western, is another.
The title track is the most ambitious tune on the album;
the song recounts one man's search for the wild, wild
west. The tonge-in-cheek lyrics remind the listener of the
Tubes' "What Do You Want From Life?"
Six songs remain, and although thy -nay be better than
Wall of Voodoo's earlier materia', tlA.y are not quality
vcontents. Five of this half-dozen compose the first side of
the album. Who releases an album with the best tracks on
side two?
Although the hype insists: "listen to the lyrics," the
humor offered here doesn't stand out as material from
pop songsters such as 10 c.c. Sparks, rockers such as City
Boy and the Tubes, or the whole outrageous flock derived
from Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart.
On "Call of the West," Wall of Voodoo ? Stanard
Ridgway, Chas T. Gray, Joe Nanini and Marc Moreland ?
are still splattering goofy techno-poop.
