Econon Wanda M. Hite You've seen the type. She walks slowly through the grocery store and as she stops to pick up an item, quickly flips through about 60 coupons to see if she has one for that particular item. If she doesn't have a coupon, then unless it's absolutely necessary that she purchase that item, then she puts it back on the shelf. The coupon-saver shops to save money and name brands mean nothing. If she has a coupon for an item, she buys it. And, sometimes if she has a coupon offering an excellent deal on an item she doesn't need, that doesn't matter, she still buys it. When she goes to the store, she picks up extra coupons in the box near the entrance but she leaves none. She hoardes. And we walk behind her in the store and laugh to ourselves about how silly she looks. WE MAY not all be that much of a fanatic, but we too, have become addicted to the world of coupons. "No coupons, no supper," she says. Recently the Gamecock carried a coupon for free coffee. If you took the coupon tn thp Pnmnns Ronkstnrp then you would receive a free sample of various General Food coffees. Within an hour after the first few Gamecocks were distributed, students were standing in line for their 'free coffee.' "I don't like coffee," admitted one student, "but the deal is too good to pass up." ANOTHER STUDENTsaid, "I looked through about six copies of the Gamecock so I could get a coupon for the coffee and every single one had a blank h I and Hats 1 7361699 H nBBHnUHHEBHHmH uro's >. That's the rule most students at ? l 1 1 nave oegun iu live vy. In fact, some students admit they never read the Gamecock. They simply pick up a copy so they can cut out all the coupons. Some students plan their weekly meals around the specials that are often offered. IT'S AN addiction that we can't seem to break away from and even though we often laugh at ourselves, deep down we know we're the smart ones because we're saving money. According to one graduate student, he earns six extra meals a week by using the coupons in the paper. with ti I SHIR Lower Level I Columbia Mall "IP Maim I $1.00 OFF any si [ 1 2 Free Cokes wit M 4 Free Cokes wil a Main Street Store Only E> 631 Main Ji MH HI coupon I * I I llm I I 1 !! Campus ads for restaurants are just as valuable. It's not unusual to see students sitting in the corner of a restaurant counting pennies. But then, just as they are about to give up hope, one slips out and returns shortly with a coupon. Saved every time! THEN THERE are always the closet 'coupon-savers.' They tell you there's an interesting article in the paper so they grab about 15 Gamecocks. But once they get home, they get out a pair of scissors and start cutting out coupons. They probably keep a small file in their underwear drawer where they neatly put all their coupons. ~1 iy Shirt | 1 I 1 7 36-1699 I Expires 10/3 1/82 | Vlauros 1 I 2 Calzones j'j nd 2 Cokes [\ *b.-ZU j-l oreOnly Expires 10-1 7-82 I I 799-4432 [ coupon ME |!
