He was a fast, Bronx native who could track down fly balls hit anywhere near him. He sparked the Mets offense with his aggressive base running. That center fielder was Lee Mazilli. Today the Mets center fielder is faster and better offensively and defensively, but the center fielder is former Carolina player Mookie Wilson, not Mazilli. The Mets had enough confidence in Wilson's ability as starting center fielder that they traded Mazilli to the Texas Rangers during spring training, and Wilson was given the center field job. He hasn't disappointed the Mets. Actually, Wilson showed what he could do during his rookie year with the Mets in 1981. The 5-10 speedster batted 271 and finished seventh in Rookie of the Year voting in the shortened season. Wilson started off the 1982 season among the top 10 in the league in hits and batting average. He has cooled off to a solid .281 batting average, and he leads the team in stolen bases (29) and runs scored (53). Although Mets manager George Bamberger calls Wilson the "perfecf'lead off hitter, he is probably anything but that. However, he is third on the team in RBI with 38, which is quite a feat for a lead-off hitter. Wilson is aware he needs to improve his on-base percentage to become a more effective lead-off hitter. "I'm willing to learn," the 26-year-old said. "When I get more experience, the strikeouts will come down and the walks will go up." Defensively, the Mets are more than happy with Wilson's performance in the outfield. "I think he can become another Paul Blair," Bamberger said, referring to the former defensive genius and perennial Gold Glove winner with the Baltimore Orioles. "I think he's one of the finest center f:-u lienors in DaseDall right now, Bamberger said. "He just outruns the ball." Wilson received a scholarship to pitch for Spartanburg Methodist Junior College after playing for BambergEhrhardt High School. Two years later, he switched to center field when he came to USC on a baseball scholarship. In his first and only year as a Gamecock, Wilson and current Chicago Cubs pitcher Randy Martz helped lead June Raines' first USC ballclub to a second-place finish in the 1977 College World Series.
