New album bleached imitation Tho Hunter' By Marc Fink Blondie's been taking it easy since the popular appeal and critical put-down of "Autoamerican" in 1981. It hasn't been easy for Debbie Harry, Chris Stein and Co. since the release of "Parallel Lines" in 1979 because "Lines" was one of the '70s' best albums, according to both reviews and worldwide sales. Unfortunately, "The Hunter," which stalks the path of "Autoamerican," is a disappointment. The hit singles and critic-pleasing cuts can be distinguished easily. Blondie used to provide quality hits; now it's either sales or good music, a dichotomy'that exists because of Blondie's lack of talent. "ISLAND OF Lost Souls" is straight out of "The Tide Is High," with Harry sounding like Carmen Miranda (of banana commercial fame) gone coo-coo. "The Beast" is a replica of "Rapture," and unfortunately Clem Burke's fine drumming and a super guitar solo are marred by Harry's jive. Harry should buy a rap-hunting license from Grandmaster Flash. "Island" and "Beast" are probable smash singles, but they are self-parody as much as anything else ? even as much as Harry's lion mane wig on the album cover. The annual Grande Trek intergalactic race is explained in * 'Dragonfly." I'm waiting for Blondie to market the accompanying video game. Burke pounds out almost African Burundi drums in "Orchid Club," a la Adam and The Ants and Bow Wow Wow, but this cut lacks the pep Adam and Annabella give to their songs. Harry's vocal is over-produced, dampening her phrasing. THE TOP TRACK on Side One is "For Your Eyes Only." It's a pity this song wasn't the theme for the James Bond flick instead of Sheena Easton's banality. It is a little too hazy in the vocals, but this is symptomatic of "The Hunter." A flip of the disc delivers three good songs in a row, which mmn 41 A i ifno m ori/inn" nffor Kuf tr/>n mnof mnrl/i r&utvciiiA^i iv.au uiuu i vji 1 ti, uui jruu 1111101. wauc through the muck to reach the trio. "War Child" is a prime example of DOR (dance-oriented rock) with a vocal line reminiscent of "Eat to the Beat." "Eat" was a turbo charged number, but "War Child" mopes along. The worst, no-excuse-for-it song on the LP is "Little Caesar." If Edward G. Robinson were alive, he'd sue for defamation of character. The song is definitely a minorleague effort. "DANCEAWAY" sets up the hot trio, borrowing musically 1 <O&AW(hitj'J jj ;poi tswcar S Specially C o. Inc. Custom Printing for Clubs & Fraternities 1 Transfers and Lettering n'^:? Jimmy Destri's organ highlights "Danceaway," for which he wrote music and lyrics. The lyrics are a throwaway, but the Beatles are mentioned, setting the stage for "English Boys." The finest track on "The Hunter" is "English Boys," a song reminscent of the '60s. Harry's lyrics betray she's pushing 40 years old. "Find the Right Words" completes the trio, and rides on upper-register bass work by Nigel Harrison, a soaring guitar line and great lyrics by Harry from the "Dreaming " and 44 Picture This" tradition. The album ends with a remake of the Smokey Robinson gem, "The Hunter Gets Captured By the Game," originally a hit by The Marvelettes. Like most remakes, this one falls far short of the original. HARRY LACKS the nuance necessary to carry the sensual, steaming lyrics, sounding cutie pie rather than passionhigh. Torch singers like Bette Midler and Melissa Manchester could do this better. Still, the arrangement is fine, electrically dusky with the third notable guitar lead of "The Hunter." "The Hunter" features some enjoyable music and the best guitar work on any Blondie LP. But a new producer should replace Mike Chapman, whose input is contributing to Blondie's gangrene as mediocrity sets in. The album is forced and calculated, mechanical rather than flesh, and a bleached imitation of the natural Blondie. ^ IWHY PAY MORE? "1^. ST UNBELIEVABLE.
