Columbia H By ANN NECKERMAN juni wilier Although plans are indefinite, a point system will be initiated for the 1982-83 academic year to put the Living/Learning program into effect at Columbia Hall dormitory. "The accountability system or notorious point system is far from a set thing at this point," said Jim Smart, assistant director of Residential Student Development (west campus). itichard Levy, Columbia Hall RHD, agreed, saying, "We did not want to set up a point system per se until we got some input from the students.'' Smart met with Columbia Hall Student Government and hall advisers last week to introduce the program in depth and answer questions. Terri Mullins, president of Columbia Hall, said Smart cleared up a lot of things. At the meeting Smart requested that a committee be formed consisting of an RHD, staff members and residents to help set the standards for the program. They will meet with Smart several times before the semester is over to come up with a plan for the point system. Although tentative, the basic idea is that each student will be required to give a certain number of hours to the dorm each semester. The number being considered is about 15 hours. This works out to about an average of one hour per week. "There are 168 hours in a week," said Levy. "It shouldn't be too hard to give one." Students will earn a point for each hour that they participate in dorm activities. Additional points, for time used in preparation, will be awarded to those who decide to plan and direct activities. The social contract was revised before room sign-up to let people know that next year will be different. The main revision was the addition of this sentence: "I also realize that this is a contract and my failure to fulfill it may result in the denial of my privilege to live in this community." According to Levy, those students who experience some sort of trauma, such as a death in the family, will be excused from earning the required number of points. If a student is one or two hours or points short at the end of the semester, Levy said, "We would not kick them out of the dorm." They would probably be put on some sort of probation or be asked to make up the hours during the next semester, he explained. Smart suggested that an appeals court be set up for students with extraordinary circumstances. In addition to the point system there will be certain staff changes. Also, Levy speculated, there will be title changes. He suggested such titles as mayor and city manager. Accessibility to USC services will be another benefit of the program. "One thing that I would like to see us do is pulling more services in from the Carolina community which are already available," said Smart. 1 If you're a senior and have the promise c Express would like to offer you the Ame What are we ? 3 Crazy ? "Out of 8,000 spaces on campus, we'd like to reserve 500 spaces for students who want a more active lifestyle." Smart sees the program as "helping students integrate what they learn in class with what they learn out of class...so that they can leave here whole persons." The Living/Learning Program has been a part of Columbia Hall and USC since 1976, when it was introduced in conjunction with the idea of coed dorms Smart said. Classes were held for several years, but the program gradually phased out. "Living/Learning, which has made Columbia Hall different, has been no more than a screening process," Levy said. "Several students showed an interest in planning activities...but they never followed through. Nothing ever follows through ? except for our parties." Smart and Levy met with hall advisers, and they decided a more structured program was needed to guarantee participation.
