Hitting the Long W Road trips are a popular and enjoyable adventure for most college students. But while some students simply get up and go and have no restrictions on their time, collegiate athletes take to the road with less than a great amount of enthusiasm. In the end, the game(s) is the trip. And while fun may be had, there are hassles too. Take the Lady Gamecocks recent four-day, two-game swing to Old Dominion and East Carolina. After leaving Bates House at noon last Wednesday, we arrived at the Omni Hotel in Norfolk, Va. about seven hours later. Looks like a real nice place, there's only one problem. No reservations. "It's all your fault," Mike Nemeth, Asst. Sports Information Director, said to me as we got back on the bus. "We bring you along on this trip for one thing and look what happens." Sorry. We ended up at Best Western motel. My roomie, Mike Sox of Instructional Services who is filming the games for the team brought his Betamax machine and some movies with him. Great, better than watching t.v. THURSDAY. 10:00 Back on our friend the bus to go to shooting practice. We go to the gym, look at the students going to class through the bus windows, use the gym, and then leave. No time to sight see. All we sa?v were the ODU championship banners and retired numbers of former players. 11:30 We are on the bus again, this time to change motels. The Quality Inn at the Norfolk airport is our home for the next few hours. I watched "Young Frankenstein" on the I i q'S AII The Pizza You Can Eat j S 6^ (Wed. S Thurs. Better than soap operas. 6:15. File on the bus again, this time for the big game. The players seem loose and psyched up. Marsi McAlister's "Ghetto Blaster" has been playing throughout the trip and it is rivaled only by the good natured banter of the players. The game starts slowly, but soon ODU starts connecting on their shots. The Lady Gamecocks are playing tentatively against the taller Lady Monarchs and are out of the game before they can get untracked.rney trail oy is points ai halftime. USC fares a little better in the second half, but the score doesn't reflect it. Sheila Foster has been shut off by what Coach Kelly called the best defensive job on the All? American all year. Six-foot five Janet Davis kills Carolina inside and finished with 25 points on 12-14 shooting. The Lady Gamecocks fall to 20-7 with-the-83-64 loss, their worst defeat of the year. FRIDAY 8:45 Bus leaves for Greenville, N.C. after a stop for breakfast. The players didn't take last night's loss too badly. ODU coach said fatigue was a factor last night for Carolina, who again used just six players. Pillows, standard equipment on these road trips, are the best seatmates. 7:00 With Coach Kelly gone to Raleigh to watch the Vomen's ACC tournament, we get to see a movie, in a heatre. We almostdidn'tfind the bus because Matney (no irst name, just Matney), who has been driving the team on charter trips for four years, put the bus in a different spot. Sometimes I wonder how he gets into the tight spots he has o get out of. 6:30 Load on the bus for the next to last time. After the ?ame we head straight back to Columbia. The ECU gym is really an echo chamber. Up in the press area near the ceiling beams I can hear shouts from the Lady Gamecock bench. USC falls behind early but rallies to take a 13-point lead at the intermission. The ladies hold off several rallies in the second half to take win number 21. Sheila Foster, Brantley Southers and Sweet E are the big guns for Carolina, with 26, 23, and 22 points respectively. 10:00 On the road again, next stop Columbia. Card games start up and the chatter is lively. It's always better to ride on a winning bus. Especially this one, where you can be entertained by Graduate Assistant Rita Johnson dancing in the aisle. SUNDAY 3:00 a.m. Home at last. A split on the road, an almost sure bid to the NCAA tournament and a good chance at a home site for the first round. Maybe the trip was worth it after all.
