OVEREATING? j If you think there's anything positive about these addicting behaviors, you're kidding yourself. All of the above are negative addictions. But you might not be | aware that many positive behaviors ? those that increase your energy and selfconcept ? are also addicting. Positive addictions make you feel better and look better ? things that add quality to our lives. These can be any number of things, including regular exercise, eating foods that are really good for your body, and f any creative expression in music, dance, or art. You can develop a positive addiction by making a commitment to yourself and bv oracticina vnur aririirtinn I behavior for a long enough period of time to make it a habit. | Understanding the concept of positive addictions is important in changing some of your negative habits. If you think that you're giving something up when you stop smoking or cut down on calories, it can be very hard to do. What you're j really doing, though, is exchanging one behavior for another ? giving up negative addictions but gaining positive addictions. And if you think that negative j habits are any more compelling than positive ones, you're mistaken. A jogging enthusiast is just as intensely attached to his running as a pack-a-day smoker is attached to his cigarettes. in order to develop a positive addiction, we must learn to be accepting of ourselves, as self-criticism is self-defeating. Remember that we do not change long-standing behaviors over night. Sometimes getting a close friend to be a support person is helpful in getting started, although your wellness is your ultimate responsibility, if you'd like to get started on developing a positive ad- | uicuun, upen uuur can provide you witn some neiptui information and guidance.
