One team which must not be overlooked among all the celebration is the Carolina Swim Team. Saturday, after swimming well but suffering a tough loss at the hands of Florida State on Friday, the Carolina Swimmers bounced back to defeat the Clemson Tigers in the most important dual meet of the season. The ladies handed the Tigers a humbling 92-55 defeat while the men showed desire and character by downing the Tigers by the slim margin of 57-56. ml a - _ ?i - * * i ne meet was nignugnieci by standout performances by ladies: Jude DeSando? first places in 200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle, and the 200-yard individual medley. The men did not have quite as easy a time of it. They saw an early lead dwindle until the meet came down to the final two events, one of which Carolina had to win to capture a victory. The 200-yard breast stroke saw Steve Sproule and Paulo Rodghiero pull in first and third places respectively thus clinching the meet. Sproule said, "Eh . . .1 knew vjo had to win it anH so did they. Winnipg it for up meant the meet, and for them it meant a chance to win." Rob Bedford, who took first in the 200-yard backstroke and was a member of the winning 400yard medley re.ay tem including E.J. Mercer, Mark Taylor and Rodeghiero, said, "That's the way I want U * ni r 'I iu ucoi v^icuisun ior my nexi two years. We intimidated them from the first event and never let up the whole time. We're going to carry this intensity for the rest of the season. We went into this meet as underdogs, but the intense rivalry sparked some fantastic performances." One such performance came from Chris Berry who finished first in the 50-yard freestyle and teamed up with E.J. Mercer to take first and second in the all important 100-yard freestyle. This meet held special ^ I2XXXLLUJJ H Vf N ' ^iza ? fOU CAN EAIli * a Chicken M paghetti w jgna* Salad h 11 AC -i?l ? 2 i Sweep ' importance for Mercer whose brother Chris is also a Gamecock swimmer. Chris' twin brother swims for Clemson and the intrafamily rivalry has begun. E.J. commented "We've got bragging rights for the next year." "Hopefully for the next four," added Chris, a ? freshman. Another great performance was turned in by Rob Gentry who earned a first place in the one-meter diving and a third place in the three-meter competition. "This is my first real big victory. I knew I had to split the two Clemson divers and at least take a second, but I got hot and grabbed the 0 first." said Gentry, who is only a freshman. 7 ft \ CORNELL ARMS PHARMACY./ P PhONE 799 1596 " ^ MIMlfR ft PfNOI [TON SIS COLUMBIA.S ( OPEN 7AM-9PM WE CASH CHECKS Three Locations To Serve You f Cornell Arms 945 Sumter St. 799-1 596 Kilbourne Rd.
