With his surprise, secret dismissal, the Board of Trustees gave themselves the opportunity to fulfill their goal of separating the athletic director and head football coaching spots. There is no question that Carlen was the best football coach USC has ever had ? his record proved it. In June they separate Carlen's two contracts as football coach and athletic director, but then extend Carlen's agreements until 1986.
