With Alcohol, By TOM COYNE Astt News EdMor and PATTY McCAtiTHY SUW Writer Although the drug trend is changing, there is still a drug problem existing today, according to Walt Power, treatment director at the Lexington-Richland Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council. Power said although alcohol and marijuana are probably the most widespread drugs, there are many other prevalent drugs that are considered dangerous. The council deals with close to 4000 cases each year. "We do not identify the people as students or other because we deal in confidentiality, but we do deal with students." POWERS said the council deals with people who range in age from nine to 90. "It used fco be that older people were involved chiefly with alcohol and younger people with drugs, but now it seems as if the older people are mixing prescription drugs with alcohol and becoming addicted. And whenever you see someone smoking pot or taking some other type of drug there is alcohol around." Powers said most cases the council receives are people who are in trouble because they have to be in trouble before they are sent there. At the university, most severe cases are sent to the council.
