Phillv Ge' M U,, IA1I\T A>UADA OJ (Ivllll VF linLI\n Guest Writer This past weekend, the city of Philadelphia was engulfed by "Stones Fever"; it seemed that the people were only talking about the Rolling Stones. Mick Jagger and his boys invaded JFK stadium for the biggest rock event in the city's history. > Almost 200,000 people attended two concerts, as the Stones opened their first U.S. tour in over three years with shows on Friday and Saturday. The Stones pumped out such classics as "Jumpin'Jack Flash," "Honky Tonk Woman," and "Miss You," as well as several cuts from their new album "Tatoo You." Throughout the day, the air at JFK stadium was filled with a sense of anticipation, as energy built for the Stones' arrival. Finally at 4 p.m., rock's bad boys took the stage and began the show with 4<rt *,f.. mu u >y 1 j u.. uhfu unuer my 1 iiuiuu, luiioweu uy wueu uie Whip Comes Down," "Imagination," "Shattered" and "Let's Spend the Night Together." In fact, Jagger sang only "She's So - Cold" from the group's 1980 release, "Emotional Rescue." Jagger roamed the 200-foot-long pink stage, dancing and strutting in perpetual motion. One would never guess that he's a man approaching iiuuuie age. The crowd ranged in age from mid-teens to late-twenties. Many camped out overnight to ensure their position up front. Stones fans drove from as far away as South Carolina to be part of the event. The concert began at 11:30 a.m. as local favorite George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers took the stage. Having the.Delaware bluesman on the bill made perfect musical sense. The following act, Journey, was disappointing. It seemed that most fans concentrated on partying rather than listening to Journey. Thorogood, however, held a captive audience with tunes sucn as "une tsouroon. une scotch, One Beer," "Ride On Josephine" and "Madison Blues." Thorogood got the crowd roaring as he declared: "There's only two kinds of music ? Rolling Stones' music and blues." The crowd was rather peaceful on Saturday, and security people kept things under control. Saturday. Jaeger looked tan and healthy, wearing football pants and going shirtless throughout much of the concert. Jagger later put on a Philadelphia Eagles' jersey, much to the crowd's delight. Jagger and Richards could be seen guzzling Jack Daniels and Beck's beer throughout the concert; some things never change. Richards, looking surprisingly alert, and coherent, appeared to be having the most fun he can remember in years. The ^ drumming and bass playing of Charlie ? Watts and Bill Wvman was consistent and hard-driving. Also present were pianists Ian Stewart and Ian McLagen, veterans of many Stones albums. All day long, fans enjoyed the music and Deauuiui weatner as well as tne usual amounts of booze, marijuana, and other stimulants. Some of the highlights included renditions of "Let It Bleed," "Tumblin' Dice" and "Beast of Burden." From the new LP "Tatoo Ymi " thp Strings "Hano ? Fire," "Neighbors," "Waiting On a Friend" ? and "Start Me Up." The high point of the show was Jagger singing "Time is On my Side," words that certainly seem to fit Mick Jagger. Time must be on his side, since he's been on top of the rock world for almost 20 years now. The concert ended with Jagger atop a cherry picker dropping roses on the crowd as the Stones jammed to "Street Fighting Man."
