Information on countless fellowships and scholarships is available through university admissions offices. Katherine Mille, coordinator of USC Candidates for Scholarships and Grants, says application deadlines for most scholarships are approaching soon. USC's Admissions Office encourages students interested in the distinguished Rhodes, Truman, Rotary and Marshall Scholarships and in the Fulbright Grants. Although it is suggested that a candidate have a 3.5-4.0 grade point ratio, many look at a student's entire academic record and other characteristics. The criteria for a Rhodes Scholar recipient includes "literary and scholastic attainment, fondness for and suc-H cess in sports, truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowshiD. moral force of character arid instincts to lpnH " RHODES Scholars are appointed for two years of study in the University of Oxford, with the possibility of renewal for a third year. All educational costs are paid by the Rhodes Trustees, each scholar receiving a maintenance allowance adequate to meet necessary expenses for term-time and vacations and travel costs for trips to and from Oxford. Rhodes Scholarships are not restricted to any specific field or career. Candidates must be unmarried U.S. citizens between the ages of 18 and 24 on Oct.l in the year of application. They must also have academic standing sufficient to assure completion of a bachelor's degree before going into residence in Oxford. Application deadline for the Rhodes Scholarship is Oct.20.
