Student Polk A new USC security plan will provide some criminal justice students with practical job experience and answer the university's occasional need for extra campus security forces. "We believe this is a pace setting idea," said College of Criminal Justice Dean Dr. William Mathias. "BY USING our students on a part-time basis, the university will be able to handle peak times without hiring additional fulltime personnel," Mathias said. During August, the students chosen completed two weejcs of intensive job training. Campus Police officers, South Carolina L n Enforcement personnel and other criminal justice professionals from across the state joined university criminal justice professors and other campus personnel in instructing the students. The student officers study such topics as the university's discipline system and evidence preservation. Human relations, ethics, fire procedures, report writing, radio r rnn n * ? <~uiiiiiiuim;auuiis>, uov/ campus f once policies and handling prisoners were among other training session topics. Students were required to pass three tests during the training period. THE STUDENT officers begin their new duties this fall, working an average of 10 hours a week, Mathias said. 44 We expect this soon will be considered one of the best jobs available for students on campus," he said. The students will have the authority of fully commissioned officers and will wear uniforms of blue blazers and gray slacks.
