A new USC security plan will provide some criminal justice
students with practical job experience and answer the
university's occasional need for extra campus security
forces.

students to work with Campus Police officers during peak
security periods at USC.
"We believe this is a pace setting idea," said College of
Criminal Justice Dean Dr. William Mathias. "It shows the
tremendous amount of confidence the university has in our
students, and we think other universities may follow our lead
in developing similar plans."

Stokes began looking for ways to handle extra security
needed during registration and special campus events,
without having to hire additional full time employees.
"BY USING our students on a part-time basis, the
university will be able to handle peak times without hiring
additional fulltime personnel," Mathias said. "In the
process, our students will be able to earn some extra money
and gain operational experience."

Students selected for the program are at least 21-years old,
are upperclassmen or graduate students in criminal justice
ana meet tne qualifications for police officers.
During August, the students chosen completed two weejcs
of intensive job training. Campus Police officers, South
Carolina L n Enforcement personnel and other criminal
justice professionals from across the state joined university
criminal justice professors and other campus personnel in
instructing the students.
The student officers study such topics as the university's
discipline system and evidence preservation. Human
relations, ethics, fire procedures, report writing, radio

prisoners were among other training session topics.
Students were required to pass three tests during the
training period.
THE STUDENT officers begin their new duties this fall,
working an average of 10 hours a week, Mathias said. 44 We
expect this soon will be considered one of the best jobs
available for students on campus," he said.
The students will have the authority of fully commissioned
officers and will wear uniforms of blue blazers and gray
slacks.
