Many watchers hoped the Legislature would elect a black to fill the 12th Judicial Circuit seat. Candidates had to express an interest in running for the open seat to a Legislative screening committee. But when no blacks expressed an interest in the seat, the prospects of a black USC trustee were; dashed. USC has come under fire for not having any blacks on its board. A U.S. Department of Education order requiring the state's higher education system to eliminate vestiges of segregation pointed out that governing boards at both Clemson and USC had no blacks on them. And because none of them was willing to express a desire for the seat, the Legislature didn't even have a chance to elect a black to the board. The Legislature should have seized this opportunity to elect a black to USC's board as a show of good faith effort to come into compliance with the federal order. If no black expressed an interest in the Seat, perhaps the Legislature should have tried to recruit qualified black candidates to fill the slot. All of this is not to say that Cecil Floyd, who was elected to fill the seat, is incompetent or not qualified to serve as a member of the USC Board of Trustees. What we are condemning is dishonesty at the highest levels of the State Department. What we are condemning is the waste of our resources on war. if these words trigger your emotions then all that proves is ihat you are not bored at my arguments.
