Errors m By David Corvett8 Staff Writer Taxpayers who filed federal income tax returns * early in the year should receive refunds in less than 10 weeks, but refunds may be delayed for various reasons, according tn an Internal Revenue Service spokesman. Mike Barnett, acting public affairs officer for the South Carolina District IRS office, said tax return errors are the most common reasons for delayed refunds. "Many people make the mistake of leaving out information regarding addresses, Social Security numbers or name changes, whereas others either include inaccurate in formation on their tax forms, use the wrong tax tables to compute their tax or claim deductions for which they are ineligible," Barnett said. INCORRECT or missing addresses or Social Security numbers on federal tax returns is a frequent reason for delayed refunds, Barnett said. However, using the preprinted, peel-off label included in the tax package can prevent this problem. ^JrjtOKNELL ARMS EMKMACYL ' PHONE 7 99-IS96 ' SUMTER A PtNDLtTOH STS. COLUMBIA,S.C. People whose names have changed, such as newlyweds, should report their new names to the local Social Security Administration office to avoid ueiays arising irum names no longer matching Social Security numbers. Perhaps the most common omission is forgetting to sign , the tax return, Barnett said. Many married couples do not realize both the husband and wife must sign, even if only one had an income. "Taxpayers expecting refunds will experience delays if the return is not properly signed," Barnett said. Another common error is neglecting to attach all pertinent information to the tax form, Barnett said. All supporting documents and schedules, such as W-2 earnings statements and statements verifying certain deductions, should be securely attached to the 1040 or 1040A tax form, he said BARNETT said, however, "Not all errors which result I r??
