An appraisal of the Barnwell Nuclear Fuels Plant has been ordered by the Department of Energy, which is considering buying the facility to store nuclear fuel after it has been used in reactors, a Columbia newspaper reported Saturday. j DUfcJ is also considering sites in Illinois and New York for away-from-reactor storage and has asked the Army Corps of Engineers to appraise those facilities as well, The State said in a story from Washington. Hinson resignation suggested WASHINGTON (AP) - House Republican leaders say a Mississippi congressman accused of attempted sodomy should resign from Congress but a spokesman for the two leaders said neither has directly asked the congressman to resign. Hinson entered Washington's Sibley Hospital for counseling and treatment after pleading innocent to the attempted sodomy charge Thursday. A spokesman for House Republican leader Robert H. Michel said Friday that Michel thinks "it would be in the best interests of all concerned if Hinson resigned his seat and concentrated on his personal problems." Accidents claim 859 lives (AP) - Traffic accidents claimed 859 lives in n.e Palmetto State during 1980, according to figures from the state Department of Highways and Public Transportation. The total is down 41 from 1979, according to Highway Safety Division Director R.P. Smith, Jr. He says 337 people were killed in single-vehicle crashes, 86 in crashes involving tractor-trailers, and 18 in collisions with trains. In addition, 55 motorcyclists were killed, as were 15 bicyclists, and four moped riders. There were 141 pedestrian deaths in 1980. Smith said that, in addition to drunk driving and speeding, there are several other reasons for the number of highway deaths. j "They include the shift to smaller, lighter cars, the continuing decline in the use of safety belts, the repeal or weakening of motorcycle helmet laws since 1976, and the growing popularity of light trucks and vans as automobile substitutes for recreation," he said.
