Barnwell appraisal ordered
(AP)? An appraisal of the Barnwell Nuclear Fuels
Plant has been ordered by the Department of Energy,
which is considering buying the facility to store nuclear
fuel after it has been used in reactors, a Columbia
newspaper reported Saturday. j
DUfcJ is also considering sites in Illinois and New York
for away-from-reactor storage and has asked the Army
Corps of Engineers to appraise those facilities as well,
The State said in a story from Washington.
The Barnwell plant is owned by Allied General Nuclear
Services, which said in a report to the government in
December it had invested $362 billion in the facility
inrougn iv/?. company omcial W.C. Galloway said the
investment would have to be recovered if the government
buys the plant.
Hinson resignation suggested
WASHINGTON (AP) - House Republican leaders say a
Mississippi congressman accused of attempted sodomy
should resign from Congress but a spokesman for the two
leaders said neither has directly asked the congressman
to resign.
Hep. Jon C. Hinson. R-Miss.. was arrested with another
man in a Capitol Hill men's room Wednesday. Hinson
entered Washington's Sibley Hospital for counseling and
treatment after pleading innocent to the attempted
sodomy charge Thursday.
A spokesman for House Republican leader Robert H.
Michel said Friday that Michel thinks "it would be in the
best interests of all concerned if Hinson resigned his seat
and concentrated on his personal problems." House GOP
Whip Trent Lott said, "I am extremely disappointed in
Jon Hinson and feel he should resign."
Accidents claim 859 lives
(AP) - Traffic accidents claimed 859 lives in n.e
Palmetto State during 1980, according to figures from the
state Department of Highways and Public Transportation.
The total is down 41 from 1979, according to Highway
Safety Division Director R.P. Smith, Jr.
He says 337 people were killed in single-vehicle crashes,
86 in crashes involving tractor-trailers, and 18 in collisions
with trains.
In addition, 55 motorcyclists were killed, as were 15
bicyclists, and four moped riders. There were 141
pedestrian deaths in 1980.
Smith said that, in addition to drunk driving and
speeding, there are several other reasons for the number
of highway deaths. j
"They include the shift to smaller, lighter cars, the
continuing decline in the use of safety belts, the repeal or
weakening of motorcycle helmet laws since 1976, and the
growing popularity of light trucks and vans as automobile
substitutes for recreation," he said.

Finance Committee also said he was on good terms with
the family of Floyd Winningham, who was named in a
warrant with trying to have Dennis killed.
Winningham, 54, of Moncks Corner, was arrested late
Thursday and charged with solicitation for murder.
Authorities described the search for other suspects as
very active
The Stat< 1 ;nv Enforcement Division charged in the
arrest warrant that Winningham offered a man $20,000 to
kill Dennis, drove the man to the lawmaker's home and
showed him a .38-caliber pistol he could use. The identity
of the second man has not been disclosed. j
One of the investigating SLED agents. Dean Powell,
said Saturday the warrant erroneously spelled the man's
name. He said it would be amended to make it Wen
nmgnam.

HOC'K HILL (AF) - The Winthrop College board of
trustees have approved two vice presidents and an increase
in campus housing fees, officials said.
In lhe board's quarterly meeting Thursday, Dr. Connie
Lee director of development for the college since last
December, was named vice president for development.
Dallas K. Fox, associate director of the University of
Florida's division of planning and analysis, was named
vice president for finance and business.
The- lee increase, to begin with the fall term, will depend
on th?> type of campus housing, officials said. The charge
for a student living in a residence hall room with a
roommate will increase by $55 to $370. A student living in a
campus apartment with a roommate will pay $25 more

further research. There is nothing proven yet," he said.
He also warned that excessive consumption of vitamin A

Dr. James Bostic Jr. said, "It's still

that "inflation affects different people

To illustrate this, he compiled a

dating costs today with what he had to

Beginning with the cost of a first

In addition, census figures show
that there are more single people
dating nowadays than in the '50s. So
the number of people for whom others
want to buy luxuries is raising the cost
of loving.
The median age for a woman's first
marriage was 20.8 years in 1970,
