Marai Taking'( to collegt tjy Honert Heeves Staff Writer "Reaching university campuses worldwide with the gospel of the kingdom" is the motto and goal of Maranatha Ministries International, a group that has operated a chapter at USC since January. The Maranatha Christian Center, on the corner of Pickens and Blossom streets, is one of the newest chapters of this group, which has branches at many major colleges in the Southeast. The group was founded in 1973 by Bob Weiner, who set up a Maranatha Christian Center in Paducah, Ky., as a licensed drug abuse prevention center for young people. The organization now operates at more than 30 U.S. colleges and has chapters in Canada, Venezuela, Brazil, England and Germany. THE GROUP has no headquarters, but most coordination of activities and funds is handled by the Maranatha group in Gainesville, Fla. Maranatha is an interdenominationalorganization, claiming members from almost all protestant denominations as wen as some Catholic members. Maranatha operates like most other religious groups with centers on campus, but the group aroused suspicion because it became active so quickly. . "It seemed like they flew down here in jets with a suitcase full of money and M natha 3ospelof K 2 campuses denomination. Tim Floyd, vice president of the USC chapter, said the Maranatha Christian Center was started with donations collected from more than 20 other Maranatha groups. He said the USC chapter is now financially independent. Floyd said revenue for the group is generated from rent paid by 10 resident students and donations received from about 40 regular members. THOSE REVENUES help support two full-time chaplains and pay for the organization's building, which was previously an Episcopal center. "Money is prettv tieht around here a lot of times, and the pastors don't receive a set salary," Floyd said. "With a lot of faith and hard work we seem to be making it, though." The center provides worship services and Bible studies as well as social activities and sports. Movies and guest speakers also are offered. BUT MARK CAULK, pastor at the center, said the move to USC was planned for more than three years. "I think the suspicion simply came out of the fact that people here weren't aware of all the work that went into getting things going," Caulk said. Some people were suspicious because Maranatha belongs to the charismatic movement and its members practice glossolalia, or "speaking in tongues." Glossolalia is ;:?jken syllables and phrase^ that sound much like languages, but are no known language.
