J Deacon quarte Vent Wake Forest football coach Jonn MacKovic told the chubby kid that he should be red-shirted for a year. The young man listened J and decided he would sit out his junior year. That made Mackovic happy because he -- had seen potential beneath the baby fat. < BY THE spring of 1979, the young man returned, minus the baby fat, and won the starting quarterback job. By the end of the 1979 season, Jay Venuto had arrived. He led the Demon Deacons to an 8-4 record and in turn won s the Atlantic Coast Conference Player-of-the-Year honors for himself and helped Mackovic capture Coach-of-the-Year laurels. But the arm that completed 208 of 386 passes for 2,597 yards was not the same. Mackovic noticed 4 something was wrong but he didn't know what. It was a rough period for Venuto "There was one time, while I was in the hospital, that I really had doubts I could come back," he said. "I said, "Here's Jay Venuto, spent three years on the bench, finally made it and now this.'" BUT HE got over that brief period. After that it was just the layoff that was hard to take. "But you have to realize that once you start doubting yourself, you become a loser." Venuto began lifting weights in April and by July he was throwing the ball. He has thrown for 15 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. His most productive performance this season came last week against the Duke Blue Devils. With the Deacon's running attack gaining only 96 yards, Venuto was forced to go to the air. The senior quarterback threw for 291 yards to lead Wake Forest to a 2724 come-from-behind victor v. LAST YEAR, Venuto was 15-27 for 165 yards against the Gamecocks including two touchdowns and three interceptions in Carolina's 35-14 win. Venuto is expected to throw even more on Saturday, with USC's best defensive back, Robert Perlotte, unable to play because of an injured knee.
