vT4 / ? ' Some things I'll just never understand. Take the names of the athletic facilities at this university. We have Williams-Brice Stadium, the Weldon Sarge Frye Baseball Field, the Weems Baskin Track, the Sam Daniel Tennis Courts, the Rex Enright Athletic Center, and the Sol Blatt Physical Education Center. Of course there is only one person who deserves such an honor and that is USC's Basketball Coach Emeritus Frank McGuire. When McGuire retired last season, only part of the coliseum (the arena) had been named in his honor. With this kind of philosophy in mind, then why weren't names used like the Weldon Sarge Frve Pitcher's Mound, the Williams-Brice Playing Field, and the Sol Blatt Men's lloom? McGuire, more than any other person in this state, was responsible for the construction of the Coliseum. To name only a portion of it after him is a slap in the face to the founding father of big time athletic success at USC. It's been about six months now since Coach McGuire moved out of his Coliseum office. All that is left in the Coliseum to remind us of this basketball immortal is a sign above one of the scoreboards. A monument might have been more appropriate. How soon we forget greatness. While on the subject of the classy Irishman, there are a couple of other things worth mentioning. Recently, Carolina fans had to swarm ABC-TV with tons of postcards in order to get the Gamecocks a little TV exposure. When McGuire was here, no matter what his team's record might be at the time, the Gamecocks always seemed to make a national TV appearance in basketball. It would also be nice to see a special chair placed in the Coliseum with McGuire's name permanently emblazened across it. It would also be appropriate to have Frank McGuire Coliseum printed across the exterior of the Coliseum. But for things like this to happen, some high ranking USC officials would have to let bygones by bygones and show a little class. THE KEFS BLEW ONE If you witnessed the USC-Georgia game you might be wondering about the legality of a miraculous punt made by Georgia punter Mark Malkiewicz in the first quarter of last Saturday's contest. After dropping the snap from center, Malkiewicz chased the moving football and booted it while it was rolling around on the ground. The referees made no call on the play. Actually, the kick should have been called back and a 15yard penalty assessed from the point of the infraction. It's called illigally kicking or batting a ball. A FRIENDLY WAGER A couple of weeks ago, Cobb Oxford, Sports Editor of The Tiger (Clemson's student paper), contacted me and wanted to make a friendly wager on the Nov. 22 Carolina-Clemson game. He suggested that the sports editor at the losing school be forced to shave his mustache off after the game. Due to a deep affinity with my finely groomed facial hair and a lack of concern for Oxford's, I along with my associates at the Gamecock offered The Tiger an alternative proposal. We suggested that the paper of the losing school print the opponents' emblem ? a Tiger paw for the Gamecock or a Gamecock for The Tiger ? on the front page of the issue following the game. The Tiger bravely accepted our proposal. Just the thought of a Tiger paw on our front page has many of us wishing that I had bet my mustache. It's called incentive for victory. asted better?
