Founded in September 1969 by the Belle W. Baruch Foundation and USC, the institute was officially dedicated in 1970. This month the Ramrh Institute was rA^flrtifipH a? nnfl of six sites in the nation to participate in the National Science Foundation's Long-term Ecological Research Program. The field lab at Hobcaw is used primarily to process samples for study at the institute's campus facilities, where the "more exotic equipment" is kept, Vernberg said. The barony has been the site of numerous scientific conferences. Construction of a new laboratory should begin in November. Vernberg said the better facility, along with the house, lab, cottages and boat house, will help attract more scientists to Hobcaw. Associates of Baruch Institute have traveled to Japan, West Germany and many other countries to research and present papers. The institute has a cooperative program with the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil.
