Coastal Research is celebrating a decade of environmental
research and education this year.
Founded in September 1969 by the Belle W. Baruch
Foundation and USC, the institute was officially dedicated in
1970. This month the Ramrh Institute was rA^flrtifipH a? nnfl
of six sites in the nation to participate in the National Science
Foundation's Long-term Ecological Research Program.
Under the direction of Dr. F. John Vernberg, the institute
has held 11 international conferences on its coastal property,

The institute and the Belle W. Baruch Forest Science Institute
at Clemson University were created through a

donated the 17,500-acre Hobcaw Barony near Georgetown
and established a trust fund and a foundation "for the purpose
of teaching and/or research in forestry, marine biology
and propagation of wildlife."
Hobcaw Barony, a forest, marsh and estuary system is "as
pristine as any place can be in today's world," Vernberg
said. "This is our playground."
The unique estuary-marsh system of North Inlet can be

environment.
Sixteen, researchers live on the property. The field lab
at Hobcaw is used primarily to process samples for study
at the institute's campus facilities, where the "more
exotic equipment" is kept, Vernberg said.
The barony has been the site of numerous scientific conferences.

is used as a meeting hall.
Construction of a new laboratory should begin in
November. Vernberg said the better facility, along with the
house, lab, cottages and boat house, will help attract more
scientists to Hobcaw.
Associates of Baruch Institute have traveled to Japan,
West Germany and many other countries to research and
present papers. The institute has a cooperative program with
the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil.
Local studies have focused on Charleston Harbor, the
Santee River, Hilton Head and Kiawah islands and Hobcaw's
North Inlet.
