Clemson University President BilJ Atchley said he feels a good working relationship between USC and Clemson will give Clemson organizations access to the arts center if needed provided their use doesn't disrupt USC's programs. Atchley said Clemson needs a performing arts center, but on a smaller scale. Edward Singleton, chancellor of Coastal Carolina in Conway said since the facility is planned for USC's use it should be available to its regional campuses also. "I think it should be for the whole state," Singleton said, adding that state money is being used to fund the center. "What are the programs? Will it serve the state, or will it just serve Columbia?" Smith said he has not been keeping up with the project. "I'm not knocking it or coming out to support it," Smith said. "I'm in favor of the arts in the state." Smith said colleges outside Columbia focus on their own communities, not on the capital. Oscar Page, vice president of academic I affairs at Lander College in Greenwood, said he knew little about the planned center, but he said the arts are an important part of the university experience. "Every major university should have an arts center to accomplish the total educational goals of that university," Page said. SOUTH CAROLINA STATE College President Maceo Nance had a different view of access to the facility. He said it would be "unethical for another school to inject itself into the planning of a facility of another institution."
