yffers Commuter free housi By Janet Gibson Copy Desk Chief Free help locating off-campus housing and roommates is available for USC's 18,000 to 19,000 commuter students "Commuter Services is to offcampus students what a hall adviser or RA is to a student living on campus," Rosemary Broadway, Student Development Specialist said. Broadway said since May of last year, Commuter Services has puDiisnea 4yy apartment openings in the greater Columbia metropolitan area, listed 223 homes and rooms and provided the names of 478 persons searching for roommates. FRESHMAN ORIENTATION brings on numerous requests for off-campus housing, she said, "but the peak months are July and August." She said a record 1,397 USC students used Commuter Services last August. Broadway said another function of Commuter Services is to help students with their rental leases. "We can caution a student about problems he might encounter and to think realistically ? we're really trying to educate students," she said. Mimi Parrott, dean of Special Services and head of Commuter Services, said the group is currently working with the law school in preparing a pamphlet about leases and South Carolina landlord-tenant rights. Parrott said the majority of students choosing to live off campus are transfers, graduate and law students. It s most difficult to nhtain housing within a one-mile radius of campus, she said. "The more you restrict yourself, the harder it is to find a place," Jones explained. Broadway said one reason students find it difficult to obtain off-campus housing within walking distance of USC is competition with state employees. She said a large number of office buildings located in the vicinity of campus account for this situation. "There's mure man jusi a siuaeni clientele around here," she said. i f """ ""1 ' I ii Delivery from 10a If you Nautilus is only for the super visit with us, you'll know the Yes, we want to develop your needs.
