Man Rav *7 From page 8 Camera" Man Hay profiles his face to the camera's eye, a light solarizauon enhances his pensive closed-eye concentration, below a hand mechanically focuses his vision. Solarization (exposing partially developed film momentarily to light) and rayographs (placing opaque or transparent objects on photographic paper) are effects that have become commonplace today, but in the 20s and 30s they were considered simply mistakes. I Man Ray was the first to investigate their potential, which led Duchamp to observe: "It was his achievement to treat the camera as he treated the paint brush, as a mere instrument at the service of the mind." Also included in the exhibit is one of Man Hay's many chess sets, along with numerous constructions and small sculptures. In a preface for a proposed book, One Hundred Objects of My Affection, Man Ray offered this explanation in the true spirit of Dada: "In whatever form it is finally presented: by a painting, by a photograph, by an arrangement of various objects, or by one object slightly modified, each object is designed to amuse, annoy, bewilder, mystify, inspire reflection but not to arouse admiration for any technical excellence usually sought or valued in obiects classified as works nf art."" On May 7 at 7:30 there will be a special screening of the films of Man Ray at the Columbia Museum, the public is invited. The exhibit itself will continue through May 25.
