After working a at numerous New York publishing tl houses, Rubin's interest had begun tl to sway towards photography. It v was logical, being the nature of her t personality, that she now desired to capture her religious and i historical ancestry on film. I RUBIN'S "VACATION" in Israel continued for nearly nine ? years, during which time she ^ r;i nv:i thp rnnntrv trnnnino j ^ within her camera the landscape, . the animals and the plant-life unique to the region. Then, in j: March of 1978, Gail Rubin was shot to death by Palestinian terrorists during a photo excursion to a bird sanctuary north of Tel Aviv. , The collection of 33 color nhdlMMr.'inhi; ciirrnnHu r>n ^ X, VA. . V..V.J v.. j in McKissick's Geology Museum say much of Rubin's love for f Israel, and for her expertise with the camera. The majority of the J work depicts wildlife, with fewer examples of landscape and ( wildf lowers. or THE LANDSCAPES, 'Sinai i Mountains" is the most dynamic in 1 terms of color and clarity. The flatness of his lower region forces one to view he work in almost abstract terms, vhich heightens all the more both he color and design of the piece. Another provocative landscape s "View From Mount Nebo". lere the crisp clarity and color of 'Sinai" has been replaced by a [rainy raw-umber that sucessively saturates itself into the listant atmosphere. A waving hint if clouds bend off in the upper right land corner, in Derfect com >ositional accord to the slant of the irst horizontal range. "Salt Formation at the Dead >ea" utilizes the textural qualities >f a glassy sea, a turbulant cloudilled sky and a crusty salt-formed oast to creat an incredibly rich mage.
