Campbell said the allegations by Bush campaigners are totally unfounded and Bush "should apologize to the people of South Carolina, for that type of campaign." Bush's state campaign chairman, Harry Dent, has stooped to "gutter politics" and the charges against the Connally campaign are "distasteful," Campbell said. "I would suggest that John Connally apologize for the nasty comments he's been making. I think what his anger shows is that his campaign is falling apart and he's frustrated. The Connally-Dent argument over black votes began last Wednesday when James Timmons, chairman of the S C. Black Republican Forum, claimed the Connally campaign approached the AME church with a $70,000 proposition that included "walking around money," which is political slang for cash used to buy votes. Timmons is a Bush campaign worker. Connally became upset wh/fn questioned about the allegation during the Republican debate at USC last Thursday night and brought Campbell to t news conference Friday to retute the charges. Friedlander Sports Editor Bill Foster, who successfully rebuilt three major college basketball programs, was named Monday afternoon to replace Frank McGuire as USC's next head basketball coach. The 49-year-old Norwood, Pa., native was rumored to be in line for the job for some time, but official announcement came less than 24 hours after he resigned from a similar position at Duke University. Athletic Director Jim Carlen said Foster's contract will be for five years at $50,000 a year, and will go into effect as soon as the new coach's Duke team is finished playing in the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament, which begins this week. The job will be Foster's fifth since he began coaching at the collegiate level in 1961. In his 20 years as a head coach at Bloomsburg State College, Rutgers, the University of Utah and Duke, he has compiled a 319-188 record. Foster said his early decision stemmed from the fact that Duke officials wanted to begin a search for his successor as soon as possible. Foster, who was named national coach of the year in 1978, agreed and immediately offered his resignation.
