Timmons is a Bush campaign worker. Friedlander Sports Editor Bill Foster, who successfully rebuilt three major college basketball programs, was named Monday afternoon to replace Frank McGuire as USC's next head basketball coach. The 49-year-old Norwood, Pa., native was rumored to be in line for the job for some time, but official announcement came less than 24 hours after he resigned from a similar position at Duke University. Athletic Director Jim Carlen said Foster's contract will be for five years at $50,000 a year, and will go into effect as soon as the new coach's Duke team is finished playing in the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament, which begins this week. The job will be Foster's fifth since he began coaching at the collegiate level in 1961. In his 20 years as a head coach at Bloomsburg State College, Rutgers, the University of Utah and Duke, he has compiled a 319-188 record.
