UCJE sllLiJUL G3 I _ My immediate reaction to the Talking Heads was: "This is awful, it isn't music. That guy singing looks like he's spastic. I hate this Punk and New Wave trash that is coming out." It took me a while to realize that the new roek 'n' roll, or Punk or New Wave, was no different then the wave of music that rose to the scene in the mid-60s. format of the music is not much different. What causes people to call it 'New Wave', is the new clothing styles and the more technologically ad vanced sound equipment. It is still just plain ole rock n' roll talking about the same ole issues. THIS PAST SUMMER I decided I had better witness some of this new music live before I made any decisions on what to tninK oi it. wnen ine ur. Pepper Music Festival schedule was published, I went to see Blondie/Rockpile and Talking Heads/B52s. The band that grabbed my attention the most was the Talking Heads. I went into the show not expecting much. By the time I left I was convinced that the Talking Heads had created a sound and image that is totally unique. However, the B-52s, who opened the show, had very little talent and are capitalizing on trying to be weird. The 'music' (and I use the term very loosely), was so obnoxious and repetitious I wanted to leave the arena and return when the Heads came out. THE TALKING HEADS don't dress real fancy, or look like they have been living in the subway, nor do they try to distract the attention of the audience with elaborate stage props and theatrics. He sings in a unique style, he yelps, screams and moves about the stage in a very jerky, almost robot-like manner. It takes a while to get used to but is wortn tne wait. i Backed by the strong rhythm section of Chris Frantz on drums and Tina Weymouth's bass(a . husband and wife team) along with the colorful ad- t r * anions 01 jerry narnsun s ^uiuu <auu ajrHiuwati playing; Byrne has created a message-filled style of music which, if nothing else, is danceable. BYRNE APPROACHES familiar subjects from a slightly off center point of view. He is one of the few people capable of writing a love song around the chorus "I need something to change your mind." In a time when bands such as the Sex Pistols were screaming political phrases like "God Save the Queen, it's a fascist regime," Byrne wrote a song "Don't Worry about the Government." The Talking Heads have released three albums on Sire Records, Talking Heads: 77, More Songs About Buildings and Food, and Fear of Music (which entered the top thirty bracket of Rolling Stone's top | album list). The Talking Heads are a band that requires much ! listening to before they can be fully appreciated. j They are not Punk, nor are they New Wave. They are in a class by themselves. They have managed to 1 create a totally unique sound, which is hard to do these days. They are tight, professional musicians, who have a lot of satiric social commentary in their music. DON'T DISCARD this band until you've given mem a consiaeraoie amount 01 attention, j&veryone who checks them out may not love them, but they may be the band you've been waiting for.
