Center. THEY STARTED the morning with a convincing win in the 400 medley relay. Then Mary deMackie, one of the women's ailAmericans (others are Mary Ellen Breen, Charlotte Hamilton, Nancy Nitardy, Anne Merklinger and Robin Athey), easily captured the 1000 meter freestyle title with a time of 10:31.39. The women dominated the 100 yard backstroke placing first, second and third. With a time of 59.6, Breen was followed by Nitardy, and Susie Reynolds. In the 100 breaststroke, Merklinger won with a 1:07.04. She is the number-two breaststroker in Canada and in all probability will be swimming for the Canadian Olympic Team this summer in A/euv (JSC swim coach Steve \ m 11+ L+ *- ? Cramer is on the Virgin Islands Olympic Team. "I'm happy with my performance," she said. "I've got to work on staying higher on the water. I started sinking a litte today." "They won all but one. They swam some of the best times they've had all year." The decision in the men's competition depended on the last event of the day ? the 400 freestyle relay. The score was tied at 45 going into the event. Both teams lined the sides of the pool.
