The USC women swimmers
smashed b loriaa Mate, hut they
hurt for the Gamecock men who
lost a heartbreaker ' to the
Seminoles 45-48 Saturday at the
Blatt P.E. Center.
The undefeated Lady
Gamecocks turned in a performance
that was close to perfection
while embarrassing their

females won every event except
one.
THEY STARTED the morning
with a convincing win in the 400
medley relay. Then Mary
deMackie, one of the women's ailAmericans
(others are Mary Ellen
Breen, Charlotte Hamilton, Nancy
Nitardy, Anne Merklinger and
Robin Athey), easily captured the
1000 meter freestyle title with a
time of 10:31.39.
The women dominated the 100
yard backstroke placing first,
second and third. With a time of
59.6, Breen was followed by
Nitardy, and Susie Reynolds.
In the 100 breaststroke,
Merklinger won with a 1:07.04. She
is the number-two breaststroker in
Canada and in all probability will
be swimming for the Canadian
Olympic Team this summer in

Woolston said East Carolina was
one ol' the most physically
aggressive teams she's ever
played against. "They were dirty
players. We about had several
fights, but we kept our poise and so
we pulled out a good margin of
victory."
Lydia Roundtree was the leading
scorer for the Lady Pirates with l(>
points, while Kathy Riley followed
with 14 points.
Lady Gamecock sophomore
Sheila Foster led all scorers with
18 points and eight rebounds.
Lvelyn Johnson contributed 13
points and nine rebounds, while
Kita Johnson had 14 points and
four steals.
Junior Jean Walling came off the
bench in the first half to lead the
Lady Gamecocks, scoring ten
points, pulling down eight
rebounds and dishing out six
assists.

in the first half, and I felt all the
guards played very well together. "
The Lady Gamecocks take on
Alabama Jan. 30 in Tuscaloosa.
Parsons said Alabama's starting

feet tall. "Alabama has stayed
close with a lot of teams," she said.
"We've got to play good basketball."

"I had a good time," Merklinger
said. "I didn't have as much speed
because I haven't been working
that hard. As we start to work

especially in the first 50 meters."
Shelly Cramer led the women
with a 2:05 in the 200 butterfly.
Cramer is on the Virgin Islands
Olympic Team. "I'm happy with
my performance," she said. "I've
got to work on staying higher on
the water. I started sinking a litte
today."
THE WOMEN lost the 100 fly by
less than two tenths of a second. It
was the only event they did not

"The women did a great job,"
Coach Steve Collins said. "They
won all but one. They swam some
of the best times they've had all
year."
The decision in the men's
competition depended on the last
event of the day ? the 400 freestyle
relay. The score was tied at 45
going into the event.
Both teams lined the sides of the
pool. There were chants of "Let's
go Cocks, let's go Cocks," and on
the other side of the pool all that

"I'M VERY disappointed,"
swimmer Keith Giese said. "We
really worked hard. All our meets

nail in the coffin," he said.
"The men swam the best thev
have this year," the coach said.
"Two of the men that swam today
were very sick, but they performed
well. They showed a lot of mental
toughness."
The men and women will both be
in action again on Friday Feb. 1 at
3 p.m. against Furman at the
Carolina pool. Both squads will
meet the Clemson Tigers at home
Saturday Feb. 2 at 2 p.m.
