> Guest C Defender of c opposes pop\ By Edward D. McCarthy Jr. Graduate Student Master in International Business 8tudtos I believe I have found a new definition for the word loneliness: loneliness is publicly defending the oil companies of the world in today's antibusiness environment. MY MOTHER opposes me. My future motherin-law is waiting for me to return home for the wedding so sne can argue with me. My lack of manners and education has been detailed in the campus newspaper. T find mvcplf nrcJiiino u/ith colf.ctvloH ovnortc A UVJIVVi V/VJ^VI K? who bombard me with unproven, trivial accusations of oil companies' illegal activities. All in all. mine is not a DODular opinion to hold. However, it is an opinion I will continue to hold and express, for to remain silent would be equivalent to agreeing with popular opinion. It appears as a nation we are slowly beginning to recognize our recent problems as a product of government interference in the energy market. I won't concern myself with the question of where the blame lies for the recent gasoline problems. It appears as a nation we are slowly beginning to recognize our recent problems as a product of government interference in the energy market. The rest of the world did not share our gas lines simply because they do not have a Department of Energy We have become the victims of our own government. A RECENT "Wall Street Journal" editorial summed it up: rru. ?II _! a nc energy crisis was ana IS solvable. It is only necessary to remove the mind-boggling federal array of price ceilings, price tiers, incremental prices, fuel use barriers, crude oil entitlements, drilling restrictions and other entanglements that result in so much of the human energy of the energy industry being j - ?i * _ j iiimiuuiii tcu dnu wasiea Dy regulation. (August6,1979) nhmirt ???????? dl companies ular opinion M. Now that the public and government have begun to recognize the true nature of the problem, the obvious steo would hp to pliminntp unuprnmont interference in the energy market. This is obvious except to the government. The government's solution will be to increase taxation and create a new government energy deDartment This is not sumrisino crivnri calf. perpetuating nature of organizations and regulations, and Mr. Carter's need to create an image of leadership capabilities. The windfall profits tax is undisguised thievery, and to urge its passage is to serve as an accomplice to theft. It would be extremely difficult for the government to admit its error and dismantle the energy bureaucracy; indeed, it would set a dangerous preceaeni. ine aemise ol DUE would soon be followed by calls for the elimination of other nonproductive agencies and regulations. RECENT PROPOSALS for a windfall oil profits tax and the creation of a new energy bureaucracy must be stopped. The windfall profits tax is undisguised thievery, and to urge its passage is to serve as an accomplice to theft. This tax will not serve to stimulate the search for energy. It will only serve to increase the supporting congressman's popularity at home. The oil companies will serve as convenient scapegoats. No degree of popularity can justify this theft of business earnings above the normal tax rate. To further disrupt free market practices, the government will create a new energy bureaucracy. It would be a most pleasant surprise if this proposed multi-billion dollar monstrosity succeeded. But, an examination of such efforts in the past does not encourage this hope. WE FACE a difficult choice. Should we allow our government to follow an immoral, potentially disastrous course, or will we turn to a free energy market economy? It is not a choice to be taken lightly. f "'COUPON OFFER EXPIRES 9/31/70-"" ? I How about some __ _ _ i Tender Loving Care } at a fantastic price?
