Fencers in openi By Michelle Burchette Qamacock Staff Writer In its first intercollegiate tournament of the year, the USC Fencing Club emerged victorious. The tournament, hosted by Carolina, was a three way meet between USC, the Citadel, and Georgia Southern. Each team fenced 27 bouts against each of its opponents, producing a close final score of USC 28, Georgia Southern 27, and the Citadel 26. Tournament director Charlie Thompson stated, "It couldn't have been any closer." In fencing one point is awarded to the team for each bout it wins. A bout, however, is won by the first person to score five points for having touched his opponent five times. EACH TEAM competed in the three different categories of fen __ 1 ? -* cuig. sHure, ion, ana epee. in saore the whole upper body is the target area. Foil involves the upper body excluding the head and arms, while epee includes the whole body. The first match of the day was between the men's teams of Carolina and The Citadel. In sabre competition of that first match up, Carolina's Lynn Henrich went undefeated in three bouts. For USC, Mark Miklos was unbeated in foil competition, while Georgia Southern boasted an undefeated fencer in two of the three categories.
