Sewanee, the University of the Souths which has dominated the event since it begin in 1975, again won first place. William and Mary finished second. There are two basic types of whitewater races and USC entered competitors in both. The racer also tries to negotiate slalom gates suspended over various points on the race course. These gates consist of forward, reverse and upstream maneuvers, testing the paddlers's skill and confidence in turning his boat.
