Strong v u By Luanne Hicks OanMceck Staff Writer "If we are going to do something, we are going to do it all the way," said Evensong member Joe * Taylor. Quality and professionalism are indeed two standards of the easy rock music performed by Evensong. The five members of Evensong have combined strong vocals with solid musical talent into a rather light but enjoyable form of music. The Columbia-based band has found a niche in the world of music t that lies somewhere between discomania and rock'n roil. The music has enough beat to satisfy the dancers in any crowd, yet the material is also produced well enough to keep listeners entertained. THE TALENTS of the experienced musicians in Evensong compliment each other well. Joe Taylor and Julie Campbell combine with lead vocalist Siiftnn Taylor to give the group one of the top vocal sounds in Columbia. Joe Taylor plays the lead guitar with the ease of an accomplished musician. The keyboards of Campbell give the band a polished sound. While Paul Russo on bass and drummer Rick Stansill keep a good steady dancing beat and add depth to the music. The stronfi vocals are a hichlieht of the group. By mixing the three good voices, the band is able to create many different moods for the audience. Songs by such groups as Fleetwood Mac and Steely Dan are characteristic of Evensong's style. The combination of male and female vocals work together to produce very accurate renditions of such Fleetwood Mac tunes as "Say That You Love Me," "You Make Loving Fun" and "Don't Stop." STEELY DAN enthusiasts will appreciate the strong male vocals on "Reelin' In the Years" and the precise version of "Rikki Don't Lose that Number." evensong sounds especially tight on "Smoke From A Distant Fire," "I Believe in Love," "Running on Empty," and "Europia." Their three original songs, "I Don't Think That I Can Go On," "Waiting For You" and "Ladies of the Night" are a welcome creative change that has been accepted well u.. us- 11 ? uy vHJiuiuuiu uuuieiices. me originals are not flashy imitations of Top Forty songs but rather a solid welding of the band's unique talents. The original numbers are a high point in the act. "We can mess around playing other people's material," Joe Taylor said, "but it will just be messing around. So far our originals have been accepted amazinfflv u/p11 " ANOTHER ASPECT of Evensong that attests to their emphasis on professionalism is dedication to their music.
