Outrageous9contains - I strange cnaracters By David Baker Oamtcock Film Critic Outrageous certainly is. Director Robert Brenner's Canadian-made comedy-drama playing at Bush River Mall Cinemas through Thursday, slipped so quietly into town this past weekend that hardly anyone knows it's here. For those who haven't heard of Outrageous, a brief history is necessary. It was released in mid-1977 in the New York area, where both critics and patrons welcomed it with open arms. It spread to other metropolitan areas and promptly died, except where it was being shown as a late show. It's now rivaling "The Rnokv Hnrrnr Pi/?hira CK??r" ??JA j ?w? v* m awut v wiiiun in UUUUlcnilY among the late night set. Why it opened a regular run in Columbia is anyone's guess. Whatever the reason, Outrageous tells the story of Robin Turner (fVo.icr PiiooaIU T n /wv ?? _ w.i?5 ivuiMcu/ auu Liiut uinnors moms mcuuren). He's a gav hairdresser who dreams of being a famous female impersonatoranc she .1 a schizophrenic escapee from a mental institution who is a oorderiine nymphomaniac. About halfway through the film, Brenner switches the focus of the movie from their bizarre love affair to his snowballing career as a nightclub mimic. The location changes from Toronto to Manhattan and several new characters come into play. Liza segues from lead to bit player as Robin (a la Mae West, Barbra Streisand, Bette Davis, et al) takes New York's gay scene by storm. This abrupt change to such a strange locale causes "Outrageous" to fall apart. Where once there were two interesting and fully developed characters, there is only one self-centered, mechanical mynah bird. And while Craig Russell's talent as a mimic shines through brilliantly, *-?" 1 cujuy wmcmng mm anymore tfian you can enjoy swimming in an empty pool.
