On new release Mason Mariposa de Oro? Dave Mason-? (Columbia) By Lehman Stiles Oamecock Staff Wrlftr Arguing about whether or not rock is dead has been the popular tmng to do in the last year or so. It's usually a good argument, too; with Beatles rehashes and 50s revivals and disco mania or fever or what have you, it's obvious that music is changing. And it is a rare and beautiful thing to find a veteran of the wars who still wants to tell us what we really know all along. This, Dave Mason does in Mariposa de Oro. Mason knows the way things are probably better than any child of the 60s who's still alive or sober. his musical associations read like a Who's Who of rock history: Traffic, the Mamas & the Papas, Delaney & Bonnie, the Stones, Jimi Hendrix, George Harrison. ADDING BACKUP vocals on the current album are two old reliables, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash. Mason's so ourn has resulted in a writing and performing style devoid of t~ trickery, sublimination or cheapness. What he sings is what he means. On Mariposa, the music represents a Dave Mason who has come through the battles with few scars. The songs express a certainty, an unfailing belief that the worst is over. It's the kind of thing you would expect from a 32-yearold rocker who has played an integral part in the history of a lifestyle. We know he means it when he sings, 'No Doubt About It,' ? "I've thought it over, and I've come to this conclusion; it's all over - hurry, worry, and confusion." Beyond a the success formulas that the las two decades have given us, h concludes in 'Bird on the Wine that "if you want to fly like a bir on the wind, you've got to give everything." The trickerj sublimination and cheapness don work. Mason knows it, and h makes the listener believe it. THE SINGLE released from th album is 'Will You Still Love M Tomorrow,' the old Goffin-Kin tune. As of this writing it has falle flat on its A-side face in Top Fort City, but that is only to be e> pec ted. Mason has taken a tiny ol 60s hit and made it a beautify piece of music, but in so doing h< has made it indefinable. It's no disco, it's not punk, hard, countr or shlock rock.
