Radiation rc By LAURIE RAPP Gamecock Staff Writer We are part of a highly active universe, according to E. Margaret Burbidge of the TTniirAKcitii ^ f !- J? ? viuv^iouj ui vaiuuillltl 111 Odll Diego. Burbidge, president of the American Astronomical Society, spoke at Gambrell Hall Thursday night on "Radio Galaxies, Quasars and the Active Universe." The activity of the universe is reflected in certain radioactive changes and noises, according to Burbank. "Twenty-five years ago, radio astronomers discovered a kind of radio radiation noise ? not coming from little green men. "IT (RADIATION) is nonthermal radiation which is produced not by atoms, but by electrons moving in magnetic fields. It is also known as synchotron radiation and is moving at speeds near that of light." The Warner Prize in astronomy was jointly awarded to Burgidge and her husband in 1959 for their book "Quasi-Stellar Objects." Sh is a member of the Royal Astronomical Society and has served as director of the Roya] Greenwich Observatorv in hei native England. Sources of radiation are galaxies and quasars, Burbank said "Quasars are a strong source ol radio waves and are presumed tc be extra-galactic (out of the galaxy). "The presence of this non thermal radiation and the presence COG BUt Featuring the finest sU and dinners at prices I# BREAKFAST < Open Mon. thru F SOUTHERN WO: To Talk U Whi Free Pregnancy Te* Referral to Social S< & Medical Facilitie Birth Control & Fa Information Problem Pregnane; Abortion Referral Our Contacts are Cc 28 or call! 1-800 I 1A14T1 I ' ? ^ ..... ;flects universe >-^^L J^^^^^^^WM^Mjj^BBMBBBBHttSSllggfc^*^^ - < i of abnormal motions of hot gas are ~ both evidence of gigantic exf plosions that happen in the > universe," she said. In 1054 the Chinese observed this explosion or supernova." Current excitement in astronomy involves the study of | active objects like radio galaxies and quasars, according to Burbidge. But the study goes deeper than the practical uses of astronomy such as the fixing of the calendar or space research products, she said. "We must question and discover and do more than survive and 1 icpiuuutc, ouiuiugt; saia. "we need to understand our origins. What is the origin of matter and energy? If we find that answer we can ultimately discover the origin of the universe."
