China: poor e< By JOHN McCURRY Gamecock Staff Writer The People's Republic of China is far from being politically stable, according 10 ur. Kicnard L. Walker, director of USC's Institute of International Studies. Walker said there have been recent purges of some key members of the 11th Central Committee, five of the members suddenly disappearing. Chinese newspaper editorials suggest that the current chairman could be in trouble. Economically, 1977 was worse for China than the year before, which was a bad year. The Chinese government, which is trying to bring its country into line with the rest of the world, has adopted a svstem of socialism nnrt agricultural collectivism which Walker describes as "unsuccessful and backward. China is just now beginning to re-enter the world of trade." CONCUR M Nr. 1 X -Sin.. relations, Walker said China, as a result of the Soviet military buildup along the Chinese border, needs the U.S. now more than ever. Although the Chinese were friendly, Walker found it difficult to discern any behind-the-scene action or to discover what the Chinese were thinking. The Chinese rarely talk unofficially with foreigners. Walker said although the U.S. has no ambassador in Peking, Americans have as much access to Peking as any other nationality. ' He said he believes the U.S. seems more emotional about China than about most other subjects, and attributes the emotionalism and great reversals in our perceptions to "our missionary heritage." W1IILK CHINA is attempting to | enter the 20th century in terms of scientific and technical progress, it retains a remarkable degree of "cultural persistence" (sticking to tradition), according to Walker, a student of the Chinese use of. cultural diplomacy.
