n- amimmmmmmmmmmmmmmm This Saturday the cards finally came up Carolina's way. After endless struggles with the big name teams the Gamecocks handed their arch-rival from South Bend, the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, their fifth loss of the season 65-60 at Carolina Coliseum. USC's last big win goes back to the 1973-74 season when Carolina defeated Marquette 60-58. Since then there have been numerous ...u? ^ ? ? iiiiica wucii inc uaiuttotRS IldVC had a team on the ropes but could not put them away. Yet in the Notre Dame game Carolina played a full 40 minutes of hustle and determination against one of the biggest and toughest teams in the nation. Anytime the Gamecocks trailed they fought like a madman to get back in the game. EVEN FIVE straight free throws very early in the game by Notre Dame's Kelly Tripucka, au;arHt>H hananca r\t n rlnnkl? "We didn't get worried when Notre Dame pulled ahead early," senior co-captain Jackie Gilloon said. "Coach (McGuire) knew our game plan was sound and we needed to work on carrying out the basics such as boxing out and taking the good shot." But if there was a key to Carolina's win it came from McGuire's strategy to use a three guard offense late in the second half when the game was in the balance. With center Jim vw -\/|s,* .,? jmW irl. ALL THREE guards waited patiently with Carolina employing a center open offense until they found an opening in the Irish zone UC1CI15C. Notre Dame, like Marquette, was unable to penetrate the USC Sportalk by Matt Ward zone and stayed in the game behind the outside shooting of Dave Batton and Duck Williams. The Gamecocks' three guard offense was the perfect solution against the big but slow-moving Irish. When Carolina trailed they kept their cool and displayed the kind of patience only a veteran team can exhibit. When the Irish fell behind they were frustrated by their missed attempts. 1 i. 1 A ' * sn^wnariiappensTimrrTrorme 12,113 people who attended the game it was like old times. AFTER BACK to back losses to Davidson and Stetson the season for USC was anything but unsuccessful. Yet the members of the team did not quit trying and the results of their perseverance have paid off immeasurably. But the happiest part of the Notre Dame game is that the two seniors who have been with the team for four years have finally (InMon tha Kin nintAxu Un..n 5V1.1.V11 tuv U15 viviui j mcjr UdVC long waited for. This is the last season for Golie Augustus and Jackie Gilloon and up to this year they had been on the short end of the stick when USC met the top teams. However, in their last chance at a big game the Gamecocks did not let this opportunity slip by. Both seniors were extremely happy with the victory and their contributions to the teams win. "I DON'T know how to describe it but it just feels good to come out on top of Notre Dame after losing to them my first three years here," Gilloon said. "It may be only one win but when you finally get it, it makes you feel so good especially because of the rivalry which exists between us and them." For Augustus the win was just as meaningful. 44After Marquette we did not stop trying and our hard work paid off big against Notre Dame today," Augustus said. "After winning today I only wished I had another year to play." Richard Vogel THE GAMECOCK )ame after losing two weeks ago n double overtime. < ill foil ,ff ;11 JL UX?
