Journalist high schoc By JOHN McCURRY Gamecock Staff Writer Nearly 100 students from sn hiah ?O" schools across the state are competing in the USC College of Journalism's High School News Quiz program for the third consecutive year. According to John Lopiccolo, Jr., a journalism professor in charge of the program, "Students from the Journalism 341 and 341 radio production classes are responsible for writing 10 to 20 questions each week for the quiz," he said. "Questions are based on current news events taken from state newspapers and from national news magazines." Each school in the program sponsors a team of three students. The show is set up so that two schools meet one weel$, two more the following week and the two winning teams meet the third week. The winners will then advance to the quarter finals which will begin on March 30. STUDENTS ARE ASKED three types of questions: team questions, toss-up questions and lightning round questions. Team questions, worth five points each, are taken from current news events. The student nollArl frt A ? A " ' vaiA^u iv answer lilt; ljucsuon fldS 10 seconds to consult with teammates. For toss-up questions, clues identifying a name in the news are used. The first team to sound its buzzer has a chance to name the personality. If correct, they gain 10 points. For each incorrect answer the team loses 5 points. Geoi Birtl SP?( Game Sitae! The individual student called upon has only two seconds to answer a current events question with no help from his teammates. TEAM AND LIGHTNING round questions alternate from team to team, and this portion of the show is carefully timed so both teams get the same number of questions. Four teams will advance to compete in the semi-finals which will begin on April 27. The two winners will then meet for the final program which will be held May 11.
