Reverse discriminatioi Bakke's c< JL 1 * . iioi appiu By Debbie Jones (iamecot'k Staff Writer There would be "no basis" "for anyone to charge USC with reverse discrimination, said Art West, director of< admissions, as the university has no special recruitment or admissions policies for minorities. Nationwide debate over reverse discrimination has been ignited by Allan Bakke's charge that Davis Medical School at the University of California is guilty of the practice. TI1K BASIS of Bakke's objection involves the federal program of affirmative action and the subjects of racial and ethnic quotas. Bakke claims that if he were black, he would be admitted to the I D I . IDUfKUfJ BARBARA BARKOOT ^QShl FREE with any 4 Good til Feb. l 1 omplaints JL 3 able here medical school. Because he is not and black students had not filled their "quota," he was rejected. At USC, "We have been trying to recruit minorities all the time I've been here said West. AFFIRMATIVE ACTION im plies corporations will "make a good faith effort" to hire minorities, seek out qualified minority candidates and institute training programs aimed al minorities ,said Dr. Michael R. Stone, a USC instructor in the Department of Government and International Studies. Bakke may have been discriminated against, said Stone, if rigid quotas were used in the admissions process at Davis. in soiiit" eaheb iumuruy persons have been hired by businesses it's iorts^ > ; Rugby purchase of jeans $7.88-$14.9C 5 Rosewood Sh "simply because it makes the books look good," said Stone. Any hiring or admission process tends to be preferential, he said. "Anyone could walk away from a job and say he was discriminated against." USC has had an affirmative action office since 1972, said Nancy Ashmore, Affirmative Action officer. THE OFFICE'S policy, she said, provides for individuals most qualified to be hired. If two applicants were equally qualified and one were a minority member, the hiring of the minority member would be encouraged.
