Tosca' ? play, wherein the immortal Sarah Bernhardt originated the role of Tosca. Puccini saw the play, and was so impressed with Sardou's script he immediately began turning it into an opera. The result premiered in Rome in 1900 and was uiic ui uie mosi unusual operas to come about at that time. Drawing heavily on realism, themes of jealousy, lust and power, "Tosca" was (and still is) an exceptional work of art. Hie performances in this show are exceptional. Mathes, an accomplished international opera singer, is superb as Floria Tosca. In all, there are few weak spots in this cast. Porter Stokes as the Sacristan is delightful, although some of his musical asides cannot be heard at times. TTie make-up is not at its best either, but these deficiencies are more than compensated for by some exceptionally good set design and Lyn Carroll's usual extraordinary costuming. Hiis is an ambitious undertaking and the results have indeed been worth the work put into the show. /vunougn opera is not for everyone on campus, this is an excellent opportunity for students to try something different.
