play, wherein the immortal Sarah
Bernhardt originated the role of

was so impressed with Sardou's
script he immediately began
turning it into an opera. The result
premiered in Rome in 1900 and was

come about at that time.
Drawing heavily on realism,
themes of jealousy, lust and power,
"Tosca" was (and still is) an exceptional
work of art.
Hie performances in this show
are exceptional. Mathes, an accomplished
international opera
singer, is superb as Floria Tosca.

There is some weak lighting in
the show, but it is (fortunately)
made up for in the last act. TTie
make-up is not at its best either,
but these deficiencies are more
than compensated for by some
exceptionally good set design and
Lyn Carroll's usual extraordinary
costuming.
Hiis is an ambitious undertaking
and the results have indeed been
worth the work put into the show.
